 Annual Meeting: A Focus on Substance Abuse

Activity Description   
A two-day activity, consisting of both knowledge and application-based sessions, designed for pharmacists, residents, and students. The theme of this year’s WVSHP annual meeting is opioid and substance use disorders. Specific topics focus on nicotine addiction and cessation, alcohol withdrawal and addiction, infectious complications of drug abuse, non-opioid pain management, CDC opioid guidelines, appropriate use of opioids, opioid overdose treatment, pain treatment in recovering drug users, neonatal abstinence syndrome, wellbeing and resilience, over the counter drugs of abuse, de-prescribing, addiction and mental health, and opioid stewardship. Most notably, 3 hours of controlled substance education will be offered to satisfy West Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations.
Activity Overall Objectives
·   Define addiction and chemical dependency.
·   Discuss comprehensive substance-use disorders including nicotine, alcohol and opioids related to statistics, prevention, treatment and recovery.
·   Discuss the implementation of an opioid stewardship team to improve safe opioid use.
·   Explain why clinical burnout is a patient care and healthcare workforce program.
·   Identify strategies for advancing pharmacy workforce well-being and resilience.
Friday registration includes up to 7.5 contact hours of CPE for pharmacists and Saturday registration includes up to 7 contact hours of CPE for pharmacists. Registration for each day includes participant handouts (posted online), breakfast, lunch, and breaks.
